The blurbs made this book sound SO exciting (as blurbs are bound to do). The beginning, sound. But so quickly does this narrative devolve that any reader has to wonder: what the heck is going on with the protagonist? Any sane person, upon dealing with behavior that she proudly puts up with, would run towards the nearest EXIT sign. She puts up with abuse heaped upon her from her boyfriend (then fiance), and his mother. There's a mysterious death in the past. Although, truth be told, this part of the novel is sort of thrown in there; for most of the time, I was confused as to what I was reading. It seemed a straightforward novel, even though it was marketed as "thriller" or "psychological thriller".This book was neither thrilling or psychological. It was tired and frustrating. The author, in a thin excuse to explain the protagonist's choice to stay with her abuser, regards her as having made a heroic effort to thwart her future mother-in-law! What a paragon of fortitude and power! While this may be in the narrative's best interest, it certainly is not in the narrator's best interest. The narrative STILL tries to paint her as a strong woman with her ideals, and this doesn't work. Let me be clear: women stay in abusive situations for many kinds of reasons, but this one does not resonate in the novel. The reasoning conflicts with the type of character that the author has tried to paint. The end is a shocker, and NOT IN A GOOD WAY. As endings go, I was surprised, and grossly disappointed. I'd read the whole thing for THIS? Ugh. Looking back, as events unfolded, I realize that none of it made sense, at ALL. A few choice words from one character would have handily solved this entire problem. Then I never would have had to read this entire novel.
I began reading THE OTHER WOMAN at noon and just finished it at 3:45 am. I was hooked immediately and couldn’t put the book down. The characters drew me in as soon as each one was introduced. Emily, 27, had been unlucky at love until she had a chance meeting with handsome, intelligent, funny Adam. They clicked almost immediately, and life was grand until Emily met Adam’s mother, Pammie. This outwardly saccharine woman was on a mission to separate the pair by doing everything in her power to remove Emily from the picture. What a great character Pammie is! I wanted to gouge out her eyes after her underhanded cruel acts, especially because her son refused to believe she was doing anything wrong. At a certain point in the book, I was convinced that I knew how the story would end. My amateur detective skills failed miserably because I was caught off guard. THE OTHER WOMAN has it all: terrific writing, great characters and an intriguing plot. What a wonderful debut for Sandie Jones! I look forward to her next book.
The book is well written and well paced, but the story is awfully contrived. The mother-in-law scheming was too much to believe. Why did she go on the offense on Emily on the first day she met her? It did not make sense that Adam decided to cancel the wedding at the last moment when he learned that his mother had cancer. And it didn’t make sense that Emily, who was pregnant and in love with Adam, did not chose to get married before the baby was born. The motives of the mother in law are revealed only on the last chapter, but such revelation makes the story even less plausible.(Spoiler alert:)If Adam was such a murderous psychopath, he’d have revealed his true colors to Emily much sooner, regardless of whether they were married or not. So what was the point of trying to stop the marriage? If the mother in law wanted to protect Emily she should have stayed close to her, instead of alienating her. I hope that the next book of the author will be more solid and better constructed
SPOILER ALERT: The reviews certainly made this book sound amazing! I bumped it to the front of my "To Read" list and dove in immediately after purchasing--for full price, I might add! That's how eager I was to read the book with so much accompanying hype! Mehhhh. It's not a bad book; it's not a particularly good one either. In fact, I was fairly certain which direction things would ultimately go before I was even halfway finished. There are no jaw-dropping revelations nor sizzling plot twists. Basically, an insecure chick with a rapidly-expiring "Best If Used By" date meets a control freak dude with Mommy issues. Mommy doesn't like son's new gf and does everything possible to sabotage the rapidly progressing relationship while girlfriend works to expose clingy mom's plots to disbelieving son. BUT....it turns out that pathologic mom is actually working to destroy the relationship because she really LIKES the girlfriend and knows her son is a huge, abusive jerk who murdered his previous gf, so it has all been to protect her. Boyfriend/son exits to prison and mom/girl friend who is now also grand baby's mama live happily ever after. The End. About all I can add about this book is that it's adequately written and adequately entertaining, although it could definitely have kept until the library wait list got around to letting me have a turn. I can also say that perhaps it would have felt less like a disappointment if the hype surrounding it hadn't been so completely overblown and exaggerated. I understand the concept of marketing, but at the same time credibility needs to considered, too.
This book got good reviews so I bought it. What a waste of money! The premise is good- jealous mother-in-law to be does everything to break couple up. But the poor writing, trashy sex scenes, and holes throughout the plot destroyed the story. And the supposedly “whipped†ending, (NYT) is ridiculous and you’d have to be an idiot to not see flaws. I love a good mystery but this is not one!
